Miss Miami: Betty Padgett
Betty Padgett’s 1975 self-titled debut, co-written and arranged by Milton Wright (brother of Betty Wright), was recorded in one evening at Criteria Studios in Miami. Though it’s only nine-songs deep, it features a nice reggae rendition of The Four Seasons’ “My Eyes Adore You”, and Padgett’s lone, semi-known hit, “Sugar Daddy”, which prominently ran in Pepsi ads in the late '70s.Betty emerged from Miami’s early-‘70s soul scene, an eclectic arena where reggae, disco, and funk were often intermixed. Shortly after graduating high school, Betty auditioned for Joey Gilmore and the T.C.B. (Taking Care of Business) Express, a group she would go on to perform with for decades. Through the years, Betty built a thick resume, opening for and sharing the stage with The Impressions, Bobby Bland, Joe Simon, K.C. & The Sunshine Band, and Joe Tex among others. Betty continues to record and perform to this day.
Her self-titled debut is being reissued on Ubiquity/Luv N' Haight and is out in a couple weeks. Until then, check out “Sugar Daddy pt.1 (edit)” and “My Eyes Adore You (edit)”. Both are great and have been largely ignored for about 30-years! Enjoy!

Truth & Soul Freebies!
We here at WTTM are fans of Truth & Soul (read our interview with label chief Leon Michels!). T&S consistently offer quality music, interesting projects, and their design aesthetic is usually dope too (see: sick image above). This showed up in my email box today: a link from T&S for free music, a sampling of their stuff from the last few years. Stream or download! Enjoy and pass on the link!Sunday, February 15, 2009
RIP MVP
Big L joined D.I.T.C. via Lord Finesse, after kicking some raps during an autograph signing for The Funky Technician. "After he finished rhyming, I was gettin' his number," said Finesse, in a soon-to-be published interview. "People didn't understand the advancement I saw in this dude."

ya bad chubbs
I don't throw on Chubb Rock as much as I should, but I'm reminded of his dopeness everytime I hear a song of his. He's witty and his deliveries are always on point and crisp. Plus, his voice is distinctive and Hitman Howie Tee's beats on And The Winner Is... are fun and kinda gritty. Reminds me of early Brand Nubian in a way.

Turns out, cats from Herohill.com had the SAME IDEA for a post on the Chubbster, except... it was A YEAR AGO. Shouts to them, their post (and entire site) is real smooth. I just reposted two tracks from their post, because the links have expired. Check their site and these slammin' Chubbster joints!Read Herohill's Original Post!!

easy on the ears (and eyes)
.jpg)
Yuki Chikudate of Asobi Seksu is one of those singers that look how they sound. In this case, cute as hell. Here's "Then He Kissed Me", a 2007 cover of the Crystals' classic sung in fuzzy, shoegaze fashion. I think it outdoes the a-side, "Stay Awake", and either way, the cover image isn't too shabby:
